This highly-interactive program focuses on the development of personal and group leadership skills and knowledge relevant to successful local government operations.
This program is ideal for
department heads and mid-level managers who need a skill boost
departments that need succession and retirement planning
newly-promoted staff who need management and leadership-specific training
Three broad themes are discussed:
topics include critical role of management skills, developing self-awareness, managing personal stress, solving problems analytically and creatively, and coaching, counseling and supportive communication
topics include power and influence, ethics, motivation, conflict, and team and group dynamics
topics include measuring operational performance, problem definition, information gathering, and oral and written presentations
There are three ways to participate:
MDP is a 20-day program that extends over seven to eight months. Courses are offered in two-day modules in an informal learning environment. Instructors use facilitated learning techniques that encourage active class participation.
Participants in our Management Development Program complete a project that impacts their community.
Participants who successfully complete the course receive the “Certificate of Local
Government Management,” awarded by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute
of Government. The continuing education credits earned in this program can be applied
toward certain other local government certification programs. The program is P.O.S.T
certified and GFSTC approved.
